Last year we celebrated our 40th anniversary as the MOA. This year there's another 40th! A full 40 years ago the last /5 went down the assembly line!
If you know anything about the history of BMW motorcycles, then you'll have to admit that the /5 series was a true milestone for BMW. It represented the commitment to build the quality motorcycles that the riding public has grown to respect since 1923. It was a totally new design that was the basis for all "Airheads" to come: 12 volts, electric start, a real oil pump with a real oil filter, standard turn signals; I could go on. The /5 was the first bike to be built in Berlin at an all new factory as well.
The photo we took in Lima in 2005.
In 2005, the National Rally was in Lima, Ohio. On the spur of the moment we tried to get all of the /5’s present, together for a group photo. I guess we should have planned that a bit better, as we only had a dozen riders and bikes show up.
This year, we're planning farther in advance. We've arranged to have a "Meet and Greet" on Friday at 4 p.m. July 19. We haven't locked down an exact location yet, but you'll be able to find out at the Rally site. I expect that we'll have a photographer from the BMW ON staff on hand. Who knows? We may even make the cover!
So here's the challenge. In honor of the occasion, if you happen to have a /5 stashed away in your bike inventory, this would be the year to ride in style to Salem, show off a vintage bike that is still a viable travelling machine, and hob-nob with your fellow /5 enthusiasts. Let's make it happen!
